Product Details

Pounamu is the Maori name for a type of rock referred to as greenstone, a form New Zealand jade. Historically these stones were given as gifts to finalize agreements in the Maori culture.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century jewelry made with these traditional stones became the vogue and were frequently given as gifts.

A rare example, this 9k rose gold brooch is crafted into the motif of a kiwi bird. Known as ratites or flightless birds, these avians are native to New Zealand. A cabochon of this greenstone has been polished into a teardrop shape and used to embellish the body.

Attention to detail is apparent with engraving emulating feathers appointing the kiwi. Tiny little bird feet and the extended beak add realism to the brooch.

Please note that the piece is hallmarked with the old 9ct mark only used during the late nineteenth and twentieth century.
